First uncovered in a meteorite and impossibly rare on earth, Charles & Colvard patented the innovative high-tech process that creates this brilliant jewel from silicon carbide, the world's second-hardest substance. More durable than sapphire, ruby or emerald; moissanite's beauty will last for generations.

The World's Most Brilliant Gem

Why do so many women prefer Charles & Colvard Created Moissanite to other colorless gems? It outshines any other gem... side by side, there's no comparison.

With a refractive index of 2.65-2.69, moissanite exhibits more brilliance than diamond. And thanks to a dispersion that's 2.4 times higher than diamond, moissanite bends light into mesmerizing rainbow flashes of fire... over two times more than diamond, ruby, emerald or sapphire. By day and by night, moissanite simply dances with light.

And, carat for carat, no gem adds more beauty to your life for less of an investment. When you choose moissanite jewelry, you don't have to compromise quality, size, or style to fit your budget.

Born in the Stars

Moissanite is inspired by ancient stardust. Fifty thousand years ago, a meteorite flashed across the sky and landed in Arizona, creating Meteor Crater, a vast hole in the earth's surface 570 feet deep and nearly a mile across, along with scattering meteorite fragments across the desert. Some landed a few miles away in nearby Canyon Diablo where in 1893, Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr. Henri Moissan discovered tiny sparkling crystals of silicon carbide. This new gem was later named moissanite in his honor by Tiffany & Co. gem expert and mineralogist George Kunz. Naturally-occurring moissanite is incredibly rare. Just a handful of crystals have been discovered, always in extreme environments like meteorites, upper mantle rock, or even as tiny inclusions inside diamonds.

A century later, the first large gem quality crystals were successfully grown in a high-tech North Carolina lab. Charles & Colvard introduced the world to the brilliance and fire of gem-quality moissanite in 1998 and today remains the sole source of created moissanite gemstones.

Beauty by the Numbers

Moissanite's exceptional beauty is due to the physical, chemical, and optical properties of its crystals. This gem has exceptional brilliance due to a remarkably high refractive index of 2.65-2.69, fire thanks to off-the-charts dispersion of 0.104, and shine due to a high surface luster of 20.4%. Here's how Moissanite's gemological characteristics compare to other gems.

The Five Cs of Moissanite

The quality and enduring value of moissanite jewelry can be expressed in the jeweler's 4Cs. Every Charles & Colvard Created Moissanite gem is strictly examined for color and inclusions by our experienced Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Graduate Gemologists.

1. Cut

Every Charles & Colvard Created Moissanite is hand-faceted by a master gem cutter to maximize brilliance and spark the ultimate fire. The angles and proportions are precisely calculated to be ideal for the refractive index of moissanite.

2. Color

While moissanite can be found in a range of colors, the vast majority are near colorless. Moissanite colors include colorless, near- colorless with undertones of green to yellow to gray, and a few rare fancy green gems. The premium quality moissanite available is Forever Brilliant, a Charles & Colvard brand. Forever Brilliant is up to four grades whiter, enhancing its brilliance and brightness.

3. Clarity

Tiny, needle-like inclusions invariably develop during the growing process of moissanite however only moissanite gemstones that pass Charles & Colvard's stringent quality standards are made available for distribution.

Very Good (VG) Moissanite Clarity

The clarity of the vast majority of moissanite gemstones used in jewelry is very good (VG), Charles & Colvard's highest quality moissanite which are very slightly included. These minute inclusions (very small micro-pipes, very faint crystals or feathers) can only be seen when observed with effort under 10x magnification. They're invisible to the un-aided eye and have a very minimal impact on light refraction.

Good (G1) Moissanite clarity

The clarity of moissanite gemstones made available for special private label use in jewelry is good (G1), Charles & Colvard's high quality moissanite which are slightly included. These slight inclusions (small micro-pipes, crystals or feathers), are noticeable to an experienced grader when observed under 10x magnification. They're unnoticeable to the un-aided eye and have a minimal impact on light refraction.

4. Carat Size

Because moissanite is 10% lighter than the equivalent size diamond, most jewelers find it easier to sell moissanite by size rather than weight. A 6.5mm moissanite will exactly fit a setting that takes a one-carat diamond but will actually weigh 0.88 carats. If you do buy moissanite by weight, you'll find that it is 10% larger than you expect.

Like other gems, large sizes of moissanite are rarer. However, the premium for large sizes is much less, making moissanite a particularly good choice for bold jewelry designs.

5. Confidence

The Charles & Colvard Certificate of Authenticity ensures that your moissanite gemstone is an original of exceptional quality & craftsmanship.

Because it is grown in an American laboratory, Charles & Colvard Created Moissanite is a responsible alternative to mined gems, providing jobs without damaging the environment. Carat for carat, no gem offers more affordable luxury than Charles & Colvard Created Moissanite. You never have to compromise quality, size, or style to fit your budget.

Charles & Colvard Created Moissanite's durability means that its beauty and value will endure for generations.
